Artist Statement
When I began my artistic journey my main focus was on accuracy and realism. It’s not a bad place to start. I also wanted to create beauty. That hasn’t changed. While I still value excellence in craftsmanship I realized there’s much more to creating great art. I came to understand the importance of what the art has to say. A highly realistic and beautiful work of art that doesn’t say anything is like a book with a fancy cover but on the inside the pages are blank. Art is a means of communication, a universal language that speaks to all regardless of age, race or nationality. I’ve also come to learn that the message matters. What my art says determines how relevant it is. How it’s said is just as important. Every artist has a unique voice. For me to communicate successfully through my art I need to gain a thorough understanding of my subject matter. I also have to take into consideration my audience and come up with effective and creative ways to engage them. Great art is visual poetry. It can convey things that words alone cannot. It has the ability to connect in a very direct and personal way. It penetrates beyond the intellect and cuts to the innermost being, triggering feelings and emotions, provoking thought…and creating inspiration. I have an opportunity to use my art to reach others and impact the world. Having that opportunity is what keeps me going. -Jimm Scannell |
